Adventures in South Korea: Horse Races

21 Sep

A few weekends ago I went to the horse race track in Seoul.  Getting there was really easy, line four will take you there and you just need to look for the horse race track station and go up exit two. The park itself is nice and by most Korean people it’s seen as an ideal place for date or a family outing which with all the cafés that serve beer and such it’s a valid use of it. The betting is great too the minimum is 100 won  about ten cents by US standards.

I recommend this for a nice day or any time you just want to relax outdoors and look at horses.

You can even buy grapes!

Crossfit in South Korea

19 Sep

So I am now living on my own in South Korea, and I decided to attempt to get in shape, instead of just sleeping all day and leaving my apartment for work and the occasional search of food.

I had sort of been working out (things like yoga and the very useful youtube video that allowed you to pause and forget about the video. I perfected that technique by getting food.). Then one day someone mentioned crossfit ( personally was one of those people who thought crossfit was not the ideal workout since you could get seriously hurt if you don’t know what you are doing. However the fact that most of the exercises make it seem like a Ninja warrior obstacle course. Now I have signed away my rights to be an unfit slob and agreed to going every weekday.

I do manage to get up early no and I can do some of the excises. But I am on my fourth day and the equipment has not fully accepted me as a matter of fact the pull-up bars reject with all their might, and my only friend (sometimes) is the mat where I can lay, in between push-ups.

I goal so far is to be able to do a normal run without having my arms trying to jump ship. If the day does come I will write it here, so you will know.

Adventures in South Korea: Survival Game

14 Sep

So, I did stuff!! (yay me!) I have never been to paintball but according to this awesome show community. Getting two teams together and battling it out for ultimate survival, in an arena with paintball guns sound like the best experience ever.

So I saw some fliers showing paintball in them in South Korea and I decided that this would be he time I would make a plan and make people go (unfortunately being here for only a few months, and having a bit of a social awkwardness to my name, did not grant me enough social pull to make people come to it, but more on that later). I also admittedly am not really good at the making plans thing.

But this time I did my homework, I searched the internet for places near Samcheok and I found nothing (this was mostly due to the fact that, most of the websites where in Korean, and the little English did not quite make sense to me) so I did what I always do (since I have been in South Korea and became aware that this was an actual thing) and called the ever so helpful  1330 tourist info line. They gave me a number of the closest Survival game place (because according to the internet this is what they call paintball games here).

I have to say the man does not really speak English but he made more of an effort that the other places I tried to call which was nice. I set a time and he gave me a price along with his address. The price was actually great 10,000 won per person per hour, and well the address I sort of had to go to the actual info center to get a better address (because I was way off).

The owner even went as far as messaging me on Kakao talk (which if you don’t know it is an awesome message system widely used in Korea).

So Where is this place in Gangneung (remember the place I wanted to go to but accidentally got sent to Gangnam instead?). I handed the address to a cab driver who had to input it in his GPS (this may not sound like a big deal but usually cab drivers have been everywhere and never need to input things on their GPS systems).  This place is a bit remote, we (the three of us awesome enough to go to this) were dropped off on the side of the road (only 6,00 won for the cab ride from the bus terminal btw) and I then proceeded to call the man and ask him how we wound ever get to this battle ground (Battle Ground is actually the name of the place), he told me to wait at the parking lot where there is a restaurant and tennis/sport court and he came to meet us and lead us to the battle grounds.

Which were really nice actually there are several, crates that can be used as shields (you do have to be careful because this gets real and that means really big spiders everywhere) and trees.

ok so here is the thing this was not paint ball, this was more like laser tag. You got fitted with sensors and the gun lets you know when you are out of lives.

That being said, it was like being n a video game, once you got shot you had to re-spawn and hope someone does not shoot at you as soon as you do. The gun vibrated as game controllers do when you got shot and it would even make a death noise. You had to press a button in the gun to recharge, and head shots felt awesome to do.

I have to mention the bugs, there were many of them and also the bugs in Samcheok are fairly unreal, and awesome to look at.

The whole experience was really great, and like I said earlier larger team would have been nice specially if you get theatrical about it. But the owner gave us water in the middle of the game and was really cool and exited (he actually told us he had made all of his own equipment, how awesome is that?!).

If you are interested, The name is Battle Ground in Gangneung acreoss from the beach and a military base (not sure if that speaks to you or not, but the beaches in Gangneung are really nice). The phone number is 010-3263-5620 if you are interested, if you get into it it will be awesome.

Doctor Who: Into The Dalek

31 Aug

This week on Doctor Who! (the episode should be called Honey I shrunk the Doctor). The Doctor goes to the future where once again the human race is battling it out with the Dalek (because well the Dalek just want to ‘EXTERMINATE!’ and humans just don’t want that). He meets the war raised Journey Blue (that is her name and what an awesome name to have, and I am sure her parents were Hippies).

Just to show the old-maness of the Doctor he does the (you have to say please if you want anything out of me thing). Which Journey eventually gets even though she probably thinks she is a grown-ass-woman and should not be treated as a child (but not of that would happen if you had been polite in the first place Journey…).

The Doctor goes back to get Clara at the school where we get a first glance at Mr. Pink Clara’s coworker (also a soldier who seems to have a touchy past and everyone seems to think of him as a lady killer. Which he denies and frankly I believe him.).

Best quote award goes to “Don’t be Lasagna” (as you may have already witness if you also surf the tumblr verse, it is everywhere now) Which is basically uttered before the shrinking process, so the Doctor can go into a Dalek and repair it.

As with everything Dalek, the Doctor gets that anger/depression thing going on that often has shown to stretch the limits of the companions’ patience and in this particular case he gets slapped by Clara.

Meanwhile we get to see a bit more of Missy in “heaven”? (it seems like this is the place people who have died because of the doctor go to. So maybe it is like heaven and Missy is just to give emotional support and debrief them of their experience.)

Ok so essentially what was wrong with the Dalek was that he had become aware that human life will not yield to the Dalek desire and would forever continue to exist. This momentarily made the Dalek ‘good’ if still had the ‘Exterminate” impulse but as you can see it is not in all-caps. Once he is repaired however the ‘EXTERMNATE’ feelings come back and well he is all dalekei again. The situation gets solved by resurfacing memories in the Dalek, which is a teaching moment in Dalek brain function (pay attention Kids!). Finally our Dalek saves the human spaceship and all is alright.

Best moment the gif. above. We kept hearing how the Doctor would make a good Dalek (much like how Harry Potter would have been a great Slytherin? yeah). But in this instant the Dalek refers to the doctor a good (as in you are inherently good being) Dalek. Which frankly nearly made me cry tear (all the feels were felt).

And the Doctor felt all the feels as well.

Ok so my brain inner workings on this one. I think that the show is pushing to be like the original, we start with the intro alone is more of a trow back than original pepsi. We have an older Doctor, who’s companion is a teacher (just like in the olden times? remember? or remember watching classic Who?). There were actually some learning moments, in this episode mainly about the brain, and inactive service-people sensitivity. Clara did a bit more she is still treated like a child at times and the Doctor treat her like a parent that thinks she is getting to old to catch herself a husband, but then again he gives her anti-compliments. SO  essentially one of those parents who bad-mouths you in front of you but praises you behind your back.

What do you think the deal with Missy is is she the Debriefing department of Time Lords? is she just there to be crazy and then hit the Doctor with survivor’s guilt? or is she actually his girlfriend? Also is Clara improving as a character or was it just wishful thinking and the fact the she slapped the Doctor.

Enjoy the episode!!

And so The World Cup has ended

14 Jul

Well in case you missed it the World Cup’s final match was played and won. To be more precise it was won by the goal you see here. Germany takes home it’s fourth cup after defeating Brasil in their home court something that had not happen in ever (which then it lead to Brazil being beaten by the Netherlands).

The Netherlands beat Brazil for the third place, which is sad because football is all about people who really want to will and only have a 40% chance of relying in their talent and the rest is up to other elements to determine the course of the game. tumblr_n8f3c4LJny1tfi4wdo2_500 tumblr_n8nuryn3ea1sp17zio1_500 tumblr_n8nvremRdE1sp17zio1_400

Germany matched off against Argentina (who I am sure is crying their eye out as we speak) tumblr_n8o9d4rfh01ry3rxao2_250

The only goal of the whole match was made during the overtime and I have to say this World Cup was ridiculous with the over times and penalty kicks.

But there you have it the winning goal and the dead eyes of Messi as he is being hugged by a German player (in the sport were the men who are not allowed to cry can cry. Messi is the poster child for bitterness)

And Germany is at the top of football glory for the next four years. (enjoy it and hope that on the next World Cup you don’t get Spained out of groups)
