After a Year in Korea

13 Jul

So I have officially been in Korea for one year and 17 days. My year mark came and went on the 22nd of July. I would have to say it has been an interesting experience, I met a lot of very interesting people even while staying in a small town like Samcheok. I said goodbye to my students and they were adorable till the end. Sadly I failed at turning them into Ninjas/spies but you know they got pretty close. The winter is Samcheok was deadly mainly because I got sick and Bronchitis does not pair well with freezing temperatures, but everyone else did not have the same problem so I feel that was mostly me. I had some great fun and enjoyed all the work I put into my lessons as well as all the conversations I got to both hear and be a part of. I will miss all the people I have met (with the exception of one person and they don’t know who they are). This is a check in WordPress more stuff to follow as I have time off and will be able to write more or at least fix my pictures situation.

Adventures in South Korea: Bonghoasan Samcheok and the Rose park

10 May

I should have posted back when the cherry blossoms were blooming but I didn’t (either way you would have to wait until next year to see a hill full of cherry blossoms).

This is right next to the hill where my house is at the moment except I could not tell you the street of where this hill is (mostly because street don’t work quite the same or at least I have not gotten the hang of them yet).

Now we did not go up this path we took the other side of the fork on the road (however this side is supposed to take you to a gazebo that overlooks the city).

Adventures in South Korea: Ocean Rail Bike, Samcheok

10 May

This weekend, I ventured out to the ocean rail bike trail! How do you get there? well you take bus 24 or 24-1 (price is 1800 won cash or 1690 with a cash bee card) to Gungchon, say it just like that to the bus driver and they will probably tell you where to get off (I showed a picture of the rail bike trail in the tourist pamphlet just to be safe).
20150509_163026

That is what the stop looks like (if you do not make it you can also get off at the Yongha stop which is the other end of the rail bike station). Now, this is very important you must make a reservation because people take this seriously and you can often be left without a bike cart. The tours leave every hour at ten past the hour and take 50 minutes to complete.

20150509_163136

As far as making reservations you can count on the tourist information center near the bus station and they can call in a reservation for you any day or at least let you know there are seat available in any of the tours for that day. Once you get off the bus just get your tickets and you can go explore which is what I did.

The weather could have been better but the smell of the ocean and the soft breeze made up for it.

Finally it was time to get on the rail bike trail. We picked a four people rail bike (oh yeah you can pick a rail bike for two or four people).

Adventures In South Korea: Samcheok Beach in The fall

14 Sep

20140913_021231

Fall is here, and beach season is officially over in Samcheok (people just do not go to the beach during no beach season all that much.)

20140913_021254

But it is still pretty even when the sand is cold.

I believe I have mentioned before the obsession that Korea seems to have with romance and couples and the words ‘I love you’. Because there are sculptures like this one everywhere, this one as you may have notices has the words I love you in many languages. (I still cannot get over the fact that my boss has sent harts over messaging) all of my being just wants to say ‘look you are a great boss and all but I just can;t do the hearts’, but oh well what are you going to do. Not that I am not “girly or anything like that but ‘I love you’ is said way to soon (Does that say something about me? I think is a healthy amount of detachment).

Adventures in South Korea?

1 Sep

Boredom has once again become my worst enemy!, and what is a person who gets bored easily to do?

Well I started out baking, my apartment did not come with an oven but because foreign English teachers are constantly changing, I was able to get a toaster oven for about ten US dollars.

So I do what I do when I get bored or stressed and I baked, luckily there was an event and I was able to give my freshly baked cookies homes to be digested in. but after the second dozen tiny jam cookie I realized that I either need more friends to give the cookies to or I would end up gaining all of the weight in the world! (yes physics people I am exaggerating here)

Right being the nerd I am, I have tried to put my efforts to Doctor Who, since it has started and you know there is also work. But I have this immense amount of alone time (don’t get me wrong I like alone time, I crave alone time specially when other people are around). But some times it feels like an outside force enforces the alone time I that I get, and as anyone who has read the Empirical studies on people and aloe time can tell you, the choice to be alone is way different than being force to be alone. which makes people use electrical shocks to dull out the boredom of forced alone time.

Anyways I have taken up origami (I have made a center piece out of paper cranes), SO now I have combined the cookie making with the origami and the result were the pictures below.
20140831_094700 20140831_094714 20140831_094723 20140831_094737 20140831_094753

If you are at all interested on the cookie recipe or origami tutorials let me know ( I really recommend the cookies and if you are a food person I am thinking butterbeer cupcakes to come, assuming I find all of the ingredients in South Korea)

Adventures in South Korea: Haesindang (penis park)

19 Jul

Ok so you are in Samcheok! if you were to google samcheok, as I did before coming over you will find that there are a lot of penis carving pictures (go ahead do right now, I can wait). If you are at all offended by the subject of penis sculptures or you cannot handle it you may look away now.

tumblr_mu9xsmNZnT1r1069oo1_500

For those of you who stayed, lets move on. First I will assume you are in Samcheok and have arrived there via express bus from Seoul (if you arrived by train, you can tell any taxi driver you want to go to bussuh teminal is oh yo). Ok you are at the bus terminal you will be able to go to the information booth located right on the side of the bus terminal and ask the ladies there (I have only seen ladies there so it might be a gentleman who greets you) for a bus schedule to Haesindang (they usually speak English, but if they don’t they will pull out a Samcheok travel book for you and a bus schedule). from there you will walk past the bus terminals until you get to a bus stop (is is covered and has a bench there will be hangul next to bus numbers and bus schedules). You will need 1,600 won (this is also in the bus schedule you get) the bus gives you change but make it small bills you do not want to walk around with 10,000 won in change.

20140719_000406

The stop will a lot like this but a bit order looking and odds are there will be nice anjumas waiting as well.

So you get on the bus,the schedule will say it takes about 40 minutes and you must get off at Sinnam (do not listen to it! I did and I ended up two stops away from where I should have been.) You will instead get off in a place that looks like this.

20140718_21533820140718_215326

This picture was taken from across the street which is where the park is but a soon as you see this building press the ‘stop’ button. you can also get off at the following stop, and cross the street to a fishing village, the park has two entrances.

Ok so you made it to the correct stop (the bus driver was nice enough to flag down the bus that would take me to the correct stop, and they dropped me off at the stop where there is less walking to the entrance). You will pay 3,000 won unless you are in a group in which case you will pay 2,000 won (for some reason prices are less when you are not a lonely looser).

20140718_235336

See the entrance? yup that is one of them.

Ok so here is the story behind this park: A long long time ago a maiden who picked seaweed was taken to a rock away from the shore by her betrothed (because there was a bit of seaweed there). He told her he would come back for her once she was done. Well the guy did not, because there was a storm and he was unable to get his boat to her (or so he said) and the poor girl drowned. Soon after the fish began to disappear, which made the people think that the girl was angry for having died a maiden (talk about sexual frustration) and so they decided to offer her phallus carving to console her spirit.  This is still done today, on the first full moon of the lunar new year people gather to carve out phallus out of wood and they get placed in the park.

20140718_215723

20140718_220125 20140718_220131

There are the images that greet you as you walk into the park, I ate a snack there.

20140718_220140 20140718_220431

I did not fully followed these stair because it looked like a bigger hike that what I was ready for however going down the stair was worth my time.

I found dragon flies! which was awesome to me anyways.

20140718_221615 20140718_221618

The path smelled like Jasmine flowers (at least it did to me).

20140718_221628 20140718_221637

There were for sure the most weird carvings because they are cut off.

20140718_221828

So I took the stairs.

20140718_221834 20140718_222039

got to an observation area where you could see the ocean from (it was nice a bit of a rest

20140718_222055

Then I saw that this also lead to a longer hike to for which I was not prepared for so I turned around.

20140718_222149 20140718_222153

And this weird looking (spider/ beetle?) jumped out from the bushes so I took a picture and run back up stairs (if you are not spider friendly you probably don’t want to go down the stairs, because there were a lot of spiders and they looked like they could kick your ass.)

20140718_222511 20140718_222514 20140718_222518

These ones are stone phallus! and they have animal, the explanation for them was in Korean so I don’t know…

20140718_222607 20140718_222618

I am not entirely sure what these men where supposed to be doing (again Korean explanation) but their penises are out so you can come up with an explanation.

Adventures in South Korea :Samcheok Beach

11 Jul

Ok so you have gotten to Samcheok, and whether it s to teach or just because you are going to the East coast of South Korea for some reason. You may end up in Samcheok beach.20140704_212824

What are we talking about here? well the time period in which these pictures were taken where a little less than a week before the beaches in the Samcheok area get officially opened (July 10th, if you want you can do the math). Before the official opening time you may find the beach a bit on the deserted side.

20140704_212826

You have a few life guards, who will yell at you in Korean if you go too deep (which is almost impossible because the highest the water got was up to my knees). There is also the natives who appear completely dressed in sport clothing and hats (because technically it is still not beach season even though I have a sunburn to show that it could in-fact be a very real beach day) and they will wade in the water with life jackets.

20140704_212828

But it is a pretty beach and those who were with me, including me got to swim in Samcheok beach. Now you will find Samcheok beach about a 10 (maybe less) minutes cab ride from almost anywhere in Samcheok (I will assume you get a cab in downtown Samcheok). you will see the farm land and then you get to the seaside.

The water does not have harsh waves (just you know don’t ever face away from the ocean, it is a stupid idea) but this beach has no pulling current that will make you an episode of lost or cast-away (even if those movies required a plane).

There is a convenience store locaded a narrow road away from the beach where you can buy all your hear may need, and if you perhaps want eatables there are plenty of restaurants also a narrow road away. Just be ready to read Korean or do research.  20140705_040010 \

There is a bathroom also but it is a bring your own toilet paper sort of thing so be prepared of buy at the store (it is called GS 25 btw, the store). As you can see in some of these pictures there are motels and hotels because why not, you are probably on vacation.20140705_040012

Enjoy awesome views, many locals get tents and firewood, you can also grill (fun fact about South Korea, no open container law so buy some Makgeolli or soju).20140705_040015

They also sell fireworks at the store so you can really go all out (as you may be able to see there are no fireworks picture because I was a bit past drunk).20140705_040251

So Samcheok beach! bring enough sunblock! and have fun, you will love it.20140705_040255
